On this day, we know that “Jesus wept.” Today we weep.
Tomorrow is coming.
Tomorrow we know that faith without works is dead.
Jesus said,
“Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted.”
We who are not the direct victims of such horrid violence are the comforters. We begin by offering comfort.
“Blessed are the merciful.” We continue by finding ways to do acts of mercy — like giving blood, or making forgiveness among our own neighbors, friends, and family a priority.
Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers.” We continue by working diligently for a world of peace. This is where the differences we have in our ideas about justice, punishment and restorative programs, and public policy will come to the fore. And this is where we must begin with asking the right questions and finding common goals.
But today, we weep. Today we comfort each other. And remember that tomorrow is coming to all of us whose lives continue. But today we weep.
