I am grateful. I am grateful that the fear I had about extreme violence did not appear after the trial of George Floyd’s murderer, nor after the sentencing. I am grateful that I continue to learn how racism is deeply ingrained in our country, in my own life. I am grateful that I care enough about the well-being of others to want to learn and grow even if it means facing hard truths in my own life. I am grateful that I believe the good in humanity will defeat the evil of racism infecting human cultures, because that belief is what keeps me travelling on the arc of the moral universe.

This week I will be preaching on being part of Team Humans in this world. I will be inviting a group of people to unite even if they have differences of opinions about how to “fix the world.” As of this moment, I have no idea how to preach this message in a world that refuses to care enough about each other that wearing a simple face covering to save a life is an infringement on personal liberty. I have yet to hear from anyone who dislikes the mask, and refuses the mask, any argument that explains on any level why saving a life is less important that covering your mouth and nose.

If being a life-saver is not a moral good, what is? It makes me wonder if I will see, and get to traverse, the next curve of the arc.

I will keep walking the path, with my mask on. And get vaccinated. The sooner we do that, the sooner the masks come off for everyone.
